About me and my background:
A native speaker of English, I launched my crusade to master Russian in college, at the peak of the Cold War, drawn to the linguistic challenge and the intrigue of that cultural/political enigma behind the Iron Curtain. While working on my bachelor’s degree in Russian studies, I traveled to the Soviet Union three times, followed by a post-graduate language program in Moscow which was to last a year. Six years later, after working as editor and translator at two Soviet publishing houses, I returned to the States and settled in Seattle with my Russian-speaking husband and daughter. The 90’s were exciting years, as the fall of the Iron Curtain gave rise to unprecedented Russian-American cultural and entrepreneurial opportunities. My first interpreting jobs in Seattle were with the Goodwill Games Arts Festival (Intiman Theatre/Театр Современник) and the Pacific Science Center Space Exhibit (with Cosmonauts Yuri Romanenko and Valentin Lebedev). This was the heyday of Russian-American Joint Ventures in everything from airlines and railroads, to oil and timber, to wine and beeswax; the subject matter of my translations varied endlessly.
I started my own computer export company, utilizing large fishing vessels off-loading product to transport computers back to customers in the Russian Far East. At the same time, with the burgeoning local Russian immigrant population came the need for interpreters in courts, hospitals and schools. By the mid 90’s the demand for court interpreters in Russian warranted certification, and in 1996 I became one of the original 13 certified court interpreters in Washington. Since that time I have devoted my career to interpreting and translating. In 2000 I took and passed the ATA certification for Russian to English translation. I spent a number of years working at the UW Medical Center in parallel with legal interpretation and written translation, which expanded my knowledge base tremendously.
I am committed to excellence in my profession, whether interpreting or translating. Serving on the board of directors of NOTIS (Northwest Translators and Interpreters Society) and as one of two appointed interpreter representatives to the state-wide AOC Interpreter Commission, I strive to train interpreters and educate users of interpreter services to ensure the highest ethical and proficiency standards and practices throughout the state.
